Patrick Dougherty
Patrick Dougherty was born in North Carolina and developed an interest in using natural materials in making his sculptures from his childhood in the woods. He produced his first sculpture from saplings in 1982. This work, MapleBodyWrap was shown in the North Carolina Museum of Art’s North Carolina Biennial Artists' Exhibition. The following year Waiting It Out In Maple opened at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was his first solo show. His work quickly developed towards its current monumental scale from single pieces exhibited on traditional pedestals. During the last two decades, he has built over 150 works throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
